Inspired! Books

Each month we recommend two books; one which we would call a classic, the second a newer title that’s worth checking out. This month we are going to tie the two together with the theme of “Hope.”

The “classic” recommendation is Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus. At our grand opening last year, I had this book in the window when a woman came rushing in with the statement “I can’t believe you’ve got that book! I didn’t even know it was still available. Obviously it had touched her life a great deal, as it did mine when it was first given to me 25 years ago as a gift from my college roommate.

The great thing about this book is that it is incredibly uplifting, hopefully and sweet – without being too sticky-sweet. I have often recommended it as a gift for someone who needs a message of encouragement but is skeptical of things that are too sticky-sweet or Pollyanna-ish.

The newer title that is well-deserving of your time is The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama.  I began reading the book thinking I was going to support his candidacy, but by the time I was done I believed we as a country have more hope than we’ve had in a LONG time – if we’re smart enough to elect him.

Three things in particular impressed me.  First was his long-range perspective.  His chapter on politics covers from before WWII to today, illustrating how the parties have gotten to where they are.  Also impressive were his examples of inclusiveness in building a team and in negotiating with “the other side”, the former very evident in how he’s running his campaign if you look closely.  Last was the personal element.  How he got together with his wife Michelle was heartening.

Besides all that, he’s actually a very good writer.  My bet is you’ll enjoy it.  Ooops, forgot to mention, we offer 20% off The Audacity of Hope – yes, because I want as many people to read it as possible.
